Hello ladies and gentlemen (yes I know this is a wall of text),
This is a letter addressed to every single follower of every single blog I own, over 1.2 million of you as of this writing…
I have been guilty of an egregious error in the Tumblr blogging community…I’ve allowed myself to become disconnected from my followers, and to become blind to the perception of 1000notes.com and its sub-blogs.
I won’t bore you with monotonous detail, but for the majority of 2012 I’ve had several major events happen in my life and the lives of my family. This resulted in me spending less time putting personal effort into my blogs, and less time in connecting personally with you, the dear followers of my blogs. I’ve become aware of a growing discord about the way my blogs have been run. I realize that what comes with being a popular website is a certain level of ‘hate’ and negativity. Nevertheless, I believe people are dissatisfied at a level which surpasses what one could consider typical, and I will address the primary reasons for this a bit later in this post (if you will do me the kindness to read it through).
The events in my life caused me to turn the reigns (so to speak) of my blogs over to other people, for the most part. Someone else posts to www.1000notes.com, the funniest blog, 10knotes, funniest10k, loltime, and the GIFs blog, and they have been for the entire year. That isn’t to say that any negative feelings towards 1000notes.com is their fault, they simply did as I asked. The fault lies with me in that I should have checked in more, I should have gauged the outlook of my readers, and I should have changed what people were having a problem with. Regardless, the people who have been blogging to these blogs will no longer be with 1000Notes, effective immediately, so that I can remove any barrier between myself and my followers.
This change and others are why I am writing this. Today, I came across a post that was extremely negative/critical about tumblefunny.com (the-absolute-funniest-posts) specifically, and it had over 50,000 notes. That tells me this is not an issue to take lightly, not at all. Changes need to be made, changes must be made, and changes will be made.
It seems that one of the primary reasons for most of those who dislike my blogs is the footer link placed in each post (“Follow this blog, you will love it on your dashboard”). That will be the first thing to go. There is a misconception about the footer link, that it is in some way capturing credit away from the creator/original poster. This could not be further from the truth…every post that is placed has been placed with the purpose of proper credit being the number one goal. Source URLs are never altered, neither are click-through links. Adding anything to a description (short of saying “Hey y’all I’m the one who really created this) still allows for the maximum amount of credit which Tumblr allows to be placed. Having said that, the reason for the addition of this footer link is simply exposure, which I’m sure is self evident. I know that there is an ‘annoyance’ factor which comes with a footer link, but it is a very beneficial way to develop a following for any blog which I am trying to get off the ground.
Having said that, I am going to change what is being placed in the footer of all posts. In some cases I will remove it entirely, in others it will be replaced by something less ‘obnoxious’.
Other changes I will be making, which haven’t necessarily been requested but which I believe will benefit 1000Notes, is I will be altering the themes substantially, for some blogs the theme will be brand new, for others it will simply be tweaked. I will also shift the type of posts placed on the network slightly so that the blogs will create a few ‘new’ posts which I find on various other websites, while still reblogging Tumblr posts which have enough notes to qualify. This will allow me to put up fewer posts (each blog is currently posting over 100 posts per day, per blog). I don’t know if over-posting has been an issue for you, but it feels like a lot of posts to me.
I will also post fewer ‘pin’ promotions (I know those can be extremely annoying), and when I do post them I won’t put them on all of the blogs simultaneously, which I know can be frustrating for those of you following more than one 1000Notes blog.
These are the most obvious and most immediate changes which will be made. I hope that every one of you will appreciate the changes, and if you have any other suggestions, please feel free to reply to this post with whatever thoughts you may have. Many of the changes I’ve mentioned won’t occur immediately, some will be gradually implemented, but slowly you will see the improvement.
Thank you for sticking with 1000notes.com and each of its network blogs, I am grateful to all of you for giving me something fun and rewarding to do every single day…
(TL;DR - Many have suggested changes to how the 1000Notes network operates, and I will be making those changes)
